Willing to Take On the Challenge of Apologizing

On February 20, 2018, Amy, our sister from the Pematang Siantar congregation, made the decision to become a disciple of Jesus and join the Married Ministry.

As a child, Amy had once experienced what it meant to have a happy family. Her family lived comfortably, and she had a mother who loved her very much. However, Amy's mother fell ill for a long time, and her treatment consumed a great deal of money.

After she passed away, the lives of Amy and her younger siblings changed drastically. Because he fell into depression after his wife's death, Amy's father neglected his children. That situation forced Amy to earn a living for herself and her younger siblings. She could not focus only on studying at school, but had to work tirelessly. Amy even spent time busking just to earn money.

Harsh living conditions shaped Amy into someone independent, hot-tempered, and free without rules. Without a family paying attention to her, Amy felt forgotten and had to struggle on her own. Yet after getting married and being blessed with two children, Amy was still unhappy. Every day she fought with her husband, until she thought it would be better to just get divorced.

Amy realized that the conflict in her marriage was rooted in her hot-tempered character. In addition, her position as a supervisor at a cafe made Amy used to ordering subordinates around. Her attitude at work carried over into the home as well. Amy became less respectful toward her husband and often acted arrogantly. Small things that accidentally touched her schema-s (psychological patterns formed in childhood that influence a person's thoughts, actions, relationships, and life choices after adulthood) would make Amy explode and vent her anger at her husband. Even though, a wife should respect her husband and be a helper to him.

In the midst of the storm striking the ship of her household, Amy often told stories and poured out her complaints to her aunt, a sister from the Nias congregation. She suggested that Amy come to worship and meet the disciples of Jesus in Pematang Siantar so she could be helped. In October 2017, Amy and her husband were willing to study God's word.

Amy's learning process was not easy. She had to go through a number of struggles, and the hardest was when she was challenged to apologize to her husband. Besides that, Amy was also reluctant to be open about her sins, even though she knew God's word taught her to be humble and admit her mistakes.

Through the prayers and help of the sisters, Amy was finally able to humble herself. She apologized to her husband and was willing to open up about her sins. Amy's resolve to become a disciple of Jesus was a weighty decision, because her husband was not yet fully ready to become a disciple. However, Amy was convinced that her decision to become a Christian did not depend on anyone else.

“Through God's word and prayers, I was finally able to humble myself before God and others,” said Amy. “I came to my husband to apologize. Many of my mindsets have now changed. And I want to live it out because I know that it is not for my husband's sake or anyone else's, but for Jesus who died for me.”

“I have seen and felt for myself how good God is. Now I understand what the purpose of my life is, which is to seek God with all my heart. No longer to live in anger but in love, especially love toward my husband.”

Amy is grateful that she was given the opportunity to know the truth of the word and experience many positive changes in her life. She has become a calmer person and is not easily provoked emotionally. Amy's children and husband have also felt the impact of the changes in her character in their family life.

“I feel very blessed,” she said. “God loves me so much. Now I value life more and want to live it in a way that is pleasing to Him.”

At present Amy serves as an usher at Sunday worship and is active in helping others through discussions of the word. May Amy continue to be enthusiastic in her new life as a disciple of Jesus and be used by God in extraordinary ways.
