Good News Siantar Congregation - Friska Silaban

Being born into a disharmonious family shaped Friska Silaban into a hard person, quick to anger, never satisfied, and bitter. Friska placed high expectations on herself, especially in academic and career achievement.

The lack of closeness in her family relationships made Friska bored and uncomfortable living at home. She then decided to pursue a master’s degree in Taiwan. Although this became her way out to avoid her family, on the other hand, Friska cared deeply about the quality of education in Indonesia.

After completing her studies, Friska returned to Siantar to work as a teacher. However, the job did not match her expectations, whether in terms of personal achievement or income. Disappointed by all of it, Friska became easily emotional, often complained, and was burdened by ambition.

This was the point where Friska surrendered and said, “I want to learn how to live well and rightly in the Lord. Matthew 6:33 reminds me, ‘But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you’.”

On February 19, 2018, Friska opened herself to learn God’s word. This was also through the prayers of a sister five years earlier that Friska would come to know God. During her study, Friska faced many challenges, such as lack of time, busyness, and struggles in her work. She also often relied on her own understanding.

However, Friska kept praying, believing, and obeying the word. The love of the congregation, who never stopped praying and spend time with her, softened Friska’s heart. What changed her was her great longing to live according to God’s standard, not her own.

Finally, on June 17, 2018, Friska gave herself to be baptized and joined Singles Ministry. She was very grateful to become a Disciple of Jesus and to experience many changes in herself. She became more aware of sin, not proud, able to deny herself, and more positive in everything.

Friska’s change was also felt by her family. Even though her career condition had not yet come close to her expectations, Friska no longer responded to it negatively as before. Instead, it made her more humble and grateful in all things. No longer measuring her achievements based on profession and level of education.

Everyone who knows Friska now sees how much happier and more thankful she is. Friska began serving in the Usher ministry at Sunday worship and wants her friends to be able to study the word as well. May Friska continue to grow in her knowledge of the Lord and be used for the expansion of His kingdom in extraordinary ways. Glory be to God alone. Amen.
