Secret Recipe for True Joy

Are you rejoicing right now? Does your joy come from certain circumstances or because of your identity as a Christian?

Then why do many people who claim to be Christian, diligent in ministry and worship, yet do not feel joy? Their lives are bound by sorrow, whether in the form of sadness, worry, disappointment, or even bitterness. Or, the people around you are rejoicing, but you are not.

What is the recipe so that we can always rejoice?

Happy, but Not Joyful

I am known as a cheerful person, with a great sense of humor, and quick to lighten the mood. An extrovert who gets along easily, even with people I have just met. Friends often comment, “You seem like you’re never sad, your life has no problems. Always laughing, always rejoicing, and you have a pleasant presence.”

At first I was grateful and at the same time proud of their comments. But at one point, I thought, “If I can make other people laugh, bring joy to them, why can’t I feel the same thing myself?”

Happiness is temporary and situational, whereas joy lasts and does not depend on external conditions. Even though outwardly I looked happy, in reality I could not give joy to myself. I felt that I had struggled to make my family happy, yet I myself was not happy. In the end, I began to pity myself.

However, when I began regularly Bible study, learning to know God and myself, I was able to feel joy. My understanding of God helped change my mindset about joy.

Here I want to share the secret to obtaining true joy.

3 Secret Recipes for True Joy

1. Recipe 1: Know Your Life’s Purpose

If asked, “Why were you created by God in your present environment?” what would your answer be?

Some may say, “To glorify the name of the Lord.” A common and familiar answer, but for a time it still did not help me understand my life’s purpose.

Then, I found this verse:

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared beforehand. He desires that we live in them.” – Ephesians 2:10

Every human being is created with a purpose and in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). We were created to do good works, which God planned before we were born. He wants us to live out that purpose by abiding in Him. This means we have the same mindset, character, and heart as Christ (Christlike).

By recognizing and living out our life’s purpose, only then can we be grateful. We no longer pity ourselves or remain constantly confused, but place our hope in the Lord and seek to please His heart.

2. Recipe 2: Learn to Care for and Love Others

“I thank my God every time I remember you. And every time I pray for all of you, I always pray with joy.” – Philippians 1:3-4

Paul, who was experiencing persecution, was still filled with joy when praying and giving thanks for the Philippian church. Even though at that time the Philippian church was being eaten away by false teaching and internal conflict. Yet Paul’s response remained positive.

When I practiced Paul’s example, only then did I understand why Paul was able to rejoice continually. As I learned to care for and love others, especially those from different backgrounds and groups, I experienced immeasurable joy.

The right mindset about love gives us true joy. When I pray for or help others selflessly, I take part in their struggles. This is what makes my life more meaningful as a Christian. Seeing others grow in faith and how God works in their lives gives me extraordinary joy.

3. Recipe 3: Repent

“Yet now I rejoice, not because you were made sorrowful, but because your sorrow led you to repentance.” – 2 Corinthians 7:9

We will find it difficult to experience joy if we are still toying with God through sin. Repentance is part of the step of faith. Claiming to believe in Jesus, yet not repenting, means not yet fully believing (Luke 13:1-5).

Paul used to be a persecutor of Jesus’ disciples. After turning from his sins and following Christ, Paul also found the source of true joy (2 Corinthians 7:9-11). So, let us cast off the chains of sin so that we may fully experience God’s joy in our lives.

By recognizing your life’s purpose, learning to love others, and repenting, surely your life will be filled with true joy. Please try the secret recipes above, and enjoy living a life full of joy!
