These 3 Spiritual Foods Will Satisfy Your Spirit

One of humanity's basic, non-negotiable needs is food. Every time our stomach starts to growl, we immediately look for something to chew on. In fact, not only when we are hungry, even when we are just in the mood, we may also go looking for a snack. This last one, of course, you can still enjoy while practicing healthy eating habits, okay.

The Bible often mentions food and eating. Genesis 1:29 states that the Garden of Eden God created for Adam and Eve was full of delicious fruits. Ecclesiastes 9:7 advises us to enjoy life with eating and drinking. One of Jesus' well-known miracles was feeding five thousand people (Matthew 14:13-21). And, before He was arrested, Jesus enjoyed the Passover meal with His disciples (Matthew 26:17-25).

From this, we know that food is God's gift and something good. Instinctively, we eat so that our physical bodies stay strong and gain energy. But did you know that your spiritual body also needs to be fed? What does it need?

The Spirit Also Needs Food

Jesus answered him, “It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone.” – Luke 4:4

We need spiritual food for our inner man because human beings consist of body and spirit. Sadly, even Christians often forget to give their spirit sufficient nourishment. In fact, we need to stay alert at all times, because the devil keeps trying to tempt and hunt us down (1 Peter 5:8).

For that reason, know these three foods the spirit needs for our spiritual body.

1. The Word of God

Meditating on (and also obeying) the Word of God is one of the basic needs of every follower of Christ. Without the Word, a life that pleases God becomes impossible. Why is that?

Because it is through the Word that a person can know God and have a life that pleases His heart. Like a car, our life is the engine and the Word is the fuel. Can a car run without fuel?

By studying His commands, we will be able to receive direction in life (Psalm 119:105), strengthen our faith (Romans 10:17), and receive instruction and wisdom (2 Timothy 3:16-17). And this is only part of what God is able to do in your life through His Word. If you prioritize the Word in your life, believe that God will be able to transform your life even more.

2. Relationship with God

Is meditating on the Word of God alone enough to meet our need for spiritual food? Certainly not. God wants you to have a close and intimate relationship with Him. In Acts 17:26-27, Paul explains:

From one man He made all the nations and peoples of mankind … so that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.

In other words, God, the Creator of this universe, wants to be close to you!

Having a relationship with God means receiving His teaching, so that your character, life, and dreams become more and more like what God has. In this way, God becomes near and real in your life. How beautiful, isn't it? When His Word lives in you, your relationship with God becomes close and inseparable. Whatever happens, you know He is always with you.

In the end, your life becomes like what Jesus said in John 15:5, “I am the vine and you are the branches. Whoever remains in Me and I in him will bear much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”

3. Spiritual Community

As a follower of Jesus, you were not created to live alone. So, it is important for you to be rooted and grow in a community that can support your spiritual growth.

This refers to Acts 2:42, namely: They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship. And they continually gathered to break bread and pray. The disciples were united in a community where they could learn, grow, and have fellowship (fellowship) that was beautiful with one another.

The same is true for you. Your spirit cannot grow by itself. You need friends who can help you grow in God. Indeed, with togetherness there is certainly the potential for conflict. However, isn't it from that conflict that you can learn even more? As it is said in Proverbs 27:17, “Iron sharpens iron, and one person sharpens another.”

Take Care of Your Spiritual Body

Those are the three things that can become food for the growth of your spirit. With the combination of God's Word, a close relationship with Him, and the presence of a spiritual community, you will receive balanced nourishment to grow to be like Christ.

So, have you met your spirit's need for food today?
