A Woman Beautiful in God's Eyes

Women are often associated with beauty. This leads many women to try to highlight their beauty through cosmetics, clothing, and sparkling jewelry. Physical attractiveness has even become a commercial field. Notice how aggressively beauty products, body-shaping programs, weight-loss supplements, and even treatments and medical procedures are promoted, all promising popular beauty standards.

But is a woman's beauty really measured only by makeup, beautiful clothing, a slim body, and a certain skin tone? Is that the only way for women to express themselves and affirm their place in social life? What does the Bible say about the beauty of a woman?

 

A Woman's True Beauty

Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a wife who fears the LORD is to be praised. – Proverbs 31:30

King Solomon had about a thousand wives (1 Kings 11:3) with various kinds and forms of beauty. Seven hundred of them were from noble families, classy women who knew proper etiquette and, almost certainly, were beautiful.

Over time, Solomon watched his wives grow old, wrinkle, turn gray, and no longer stand tall and move gracefully as they once did. In his old age, those lovely wives did not bring Solomon closer to heaven, but instead led him far away from God.

Lemuel's words, based on his mother's instruction in the verse above, remind us that true beauty is not only what is seen outwardly: body shape, height and weight, skin color, hair type, and face. True beauty shines from within, untouched by time and advancing age. And this perfect beauty is achieved when a woman has the fear of the Lord.

Do not feel inferior if you have not been given a beautiful face, an ideal body shape, or expensive designer clothes. There is no need to lose your confidence, feel less attractive, or less valuable just because of those things. When you fear the Lord, love the Lord, and His word, you already possess true beauty!

So let us focus on pleasing the Lord rather than on our appearance.

How God Sees Women

But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For God does not see as man sees; man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." – 1 Samuel 16:7

I have a bitter memory of how beauty was often used as an indicator of a woman's worth.

I used to attend one of the favorite junior high schools in our city. Most of the students came from well-off families. Their appearance was completely different from mine, with my dull face and acne caused by prepubescent hormones. And because my family's financial situation was tight at the time, facial care and nice clothes were not my top priorities.

One time, during PE class, my friends and I were warming up in groups. When I was about to join the others, a male student shoved me hard so I would not enter his group. He judged me as “not pretty and classy enough” to hang out with them.

That incident left a deep mark on my heart. I felt rejected and worthless. From that moment on, I believed that looks and beauty were very important. They determined how other people treated me. So I paid more attention to my appearance because I wanted to be accepted and appreciated.

However, God is truly different! He does not care what our face looks like or what shape our body is. He is also not interested in our wealth, social status, education, or job. God cares only about and is interested in your heart ! . So beauty is not just about physical appearance and outward things. Beauty can also come from within (inner beauty), namely your heart. There is even a saying, “Imperfection is beauty.” Even if your body is far from perfect, you can still be beautiful!

“… but let your adornment be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. – 1 Peter 3:4

Do not worry about how you look on the outside. Everyone will grow old, and death is unavoidable. But a gentle and quiet spirit, that is, your confidence in the Lord, will not perish.

You Are a Special Creation

Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed, it was very good. – Genesis 1:31a

When God created you, He saw that it was all very good. God loves what He created in you: you are beautiful in His eyes and precious to Him. Imagine this, out of more than seven billion people, not one has exactly the same DNA and fingerprints! God could not possibly make a mistake when He created you.

Believe this: God has a purpose for your life, including why you look the way you do right now. God has also created someone who will love everything about you and accept you as you are.

This does not mean you may neglect your health or physical cleanliness by using the verse above as an excuse for carelessness. For example, you know you should wash your face regularly so dirt does not build up on your skin, but you do not do it, saying, “After all, I will be accepted as I am.” Honor yourself by taking the best possible care of your body and appearance, and of course, within reasonable limits.

Remember that you were created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). That is the best part of who you are, designed according to His image! There is nothing about your appearance that needs to be changed. Be yourself, because God loves you completely. Abide in Him, follow His word, and see how beautiful your life will be with Him! - Related Articles:
