Finding Peace Amid a Mother's Daily Busyness

Becoming a mother is one of the dreams of many women. In reality, a mother's role is not easy, especially when you take care of the home and children all by yourself, without help from family members or a household assistant.

A mother's work never ends. The moment you open your eyes in the morning, the children's cries, your husband's requests, and all the household activities are already waiting. Without realizing it, you get swept up in busyness. By late afternoon, the chaos is over, but you are already worn out. Not to mention if you also have to care for sick parents. You are tired, overwhelmed, weary in soul. You no longer feel peace.

So, what can you do to find peace in the midst of the hustle and bustle of your daily routine as a mother?

Do Not Delay Time with God

O LORD, in the morning You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You, and I wait expectantly. – Psalm 5:3

A mother's tendency is to make a list of daily routines and try to meet every target on it. Even without a list, we already know by heart what needs to be done first, and what comes next. Making a schedule is a good thing.

However, even when you manage to do all your tasks perfectly, without missing a single one, that does not mean you will automatically feel peace. Why? Because, there is a thing more important than household busyness.

Peace comes only when you begin the long and tiring day by coming to God in the morning. Before you do all your activities.

Make the morning the time you look forward to most. Not looking forward to finishing the pile of housework, but the time you can enjoy with God without interruption. When your mind is still fresh, not yet filled with so much information, not yet crowded with tension from the chaos of daily busyness.

Try waking up earlier than usual and set aside about 5-10 minutes to pray. If the timing does not allow it, you can continue your quiet time or read God's word at a more relaxed time.

Without realizing it, quiet moments with God before starting your daily activities will give you strength, calmness, and a peace all their own.

Be a Joyful Mother

A joyful heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit. – Proverbs 15:13

Imagine waking up in the morning in a bad mood, then yelling here and there. Added to that a sullen face, you cook breakfast under a heavy burden. Then, you walk to the door, sending off your husband and children to school with complaints and a gloomy expression.

How do your husband and children feel? Not only do you not feel happy, you also ruin their day. Once they arrive at the office or at school, their minds are still overshadowed by your scolding and the image of your face. Inevitably, this ends up disturbing their concentration while working or studying.

On the other hand, when you begin the day with joy and enthusiasm, the atmosphere at home will surely be different. Your husband and children feel encouraged by your smile and cheerful chatter in the morning before they leave the house.

Mothers, you determine the atmosphere of your home. Even though life does not always run smoothly and problems come one after another, you can still choose to begin your day with gladness. In that way, you radiate and give positive energy to your family members.

A Calm Mother, a Happy Family

Surely, though the river rages, it is not alarmed; it remains calm, even when the Jordan surges against its mouth. – Job 40:23

Married life certainly is not free from problems, whether financial difficulties, or conflict in the husband-wife relationship. Even so, you must remain a calm mother

Avoid complaining about the family's poor finances or an unhealthy relationship between the parents to the children. Perhaps you feel the need to tell them your worries or fears, but the children will not understand your situation any better. Instead, you actually create anxiety in their hearts, making them feel unsafe (insecure).

Surely you do not want your children to feel that way, do you? Therefore, be a calm mother. A calm person is not easily shaken in facing challenges, not easily carried away by the waves, even by the harsh currents of life.

Even when the children sense that something is wrong in your relationship with your husband, or with the family's financial difficulties, you must stay calm. Calm your children, do not make them more anxious or afraid. Assure them that everything will be all right, that God will help you all get through the hard times.

When you are calm, your children will be happy. Without realizing it, you have given peace to your family and to yourself!

Do It as Unto the Lord

Whatever you do, do it with all your heart, as for the Lord and not for men. – Colossians 3:23

There are times when I imagine that I am still single. If only I could go wherever I wanted without any “tails” always following me. There are also times when I feel burdened: being a mother seems to make my world narrower. My life revolves only around the kitchen, the bathroom, and the bedroom.

I want to socialize. I want to handle my own money. I want to work in an office in neat clothes, with my hair in place, a fresh face, and a fragrant body. I felt that being a mother was truly a pitiful job.

However, when I read a New York Post article about how much salary would be appropriate for a mother if her work were paid, I was surprised. My view of a mother's role changed. Based on a recent survey, the yearly salary a housewife should receive reaches 2.3 billion per year, or 191 million per month!

How is that possible?

Because, a housewife does multitasking work (multitasking):

  • Babysitter
  • Housekeeper
  • Catering service
  • Financial consultant
  • Teacher
  • Nurse (if a family member is sick)

Of course, being a mother is not about how much of your work could be turned into money. However, you should know this: being a housewife is the noblest job in the world. Being a mother is a privilege that cannot be measured with money.

Therefore, moms, do your duties with joy. Do not feel burdened, much less discouraged because you are “only” an ordinary housewife. Those who understand how great a mother's role is for the family will appreciate it.

Most importantly, always remember that whatever you do, including as a housewife, do it for the Lord.

Keep it up, moms! You can do it!
