3 Heart Attitudes from the Song Everlasting Father

For You are my Father, the everlasting Father.

I am sure many of us are familiar with this song, Everlasting Father. Its lyrics lead us to reflect more deeply on God the Father and what He does in this life.

The lyrics themselves are very profound: You give what I ask for / when I seek I find / I knock on Your door and You open it. The lyricist seems deeply inspired by the Father's goodness. It is hard not to be moved when we hear this song. It is as though we are led to reflect on the depth of the Lord's work.

Yet, more than just a song, this song also teaches us about the attitudes of the heart. There are traits that emerge if we truly know the Father. What are they?

True Love

Perfect love

Have I received from You

Not because of my goodness

Only by Your grace

In its opening, this song speaks about the greatness of the Father's love. To those who believe, He forgives sins and makes them worthy to become His children.

Does it end there? Certainly not. The Father loved us first, so that we too may love. Just as Jesus said to His disciples in John 13:34-35,

“...just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”

The love the Father gives becomes the inspiration for us to love as well. Who can claim to love God without loving the people around them (1 John 3:16-17)? If we believe in a God who is good and generous, it is only fitting that we too are good and generous. 

Rick Warren said the following, 

“when the Bible speaks about God's love, and the love we need to have, the word used is apage, which means we are committed to act.” 

God is love, and so are His children. Knowing God as the everlasting Father will move us to show love.

True Security

You will not let

Me walk all alone

You are always there for me

Because You are my Father

These lyrics express how, by having God as the everlasting Father, we receive true security.

In God alone my soul is at rest; from Him comes my salvation (Psalm 62:2). 

Let us look carefully at this verse. The psalmist does not say that he feels secure because he has a lot of money. Not because there are no problems in his life. Nor is it because he has friends ready to help him. Rather, it is because he is close to God.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with having wealth, connections, and a life that goes smoothly. Yet, when life's troubles come, it becomes clear in what or in whom we place our sense of security. In short, whom do we rely on when life starts to feel heavy?

If we rely on God, we will receive what is written in Philippians 4:7, And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Life may be chaotic, plans may fail, but the Lord still sustains us.

Have we sought security in God? Have we surrendered to the Father in every aspect of this life?

True Knowledge

Father, You give what I ask for

When I seek I find

I knock on Your door and You open it

In this part, we find someone who dares to ask. There is no distance between him and God. What he needs, he tells the Father.

What does that mean? He truly knows God. God is not a stranger, or an unknown figure. To him, God is so near, like his own father.

The lyrics themselves are taken from Jesus' words in Matthew 7:7-8, 

”Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who seeks finds, and to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.:

Isn't it wonderful that we have a God who is so near, and willing to give what we need? When we are struggling, we come to God; when we are sad, we seek comfort from God; when we need direction, we ask God. 

Of course, this does not mean the Lord will grant all our desires, but He will surely give what we need.

The question is, what is our relationship with God, the everlasting Father, like? Have we made sure to know Him more each day? Believe this, God wants us to have a relationship with Him. Yet it depends on us whether we want to draw closer to Him. How close and open are we with Him?

The More We Love the Father, the More We Know the Father

Let Everlasting Father not become merely a song to sing. The Father's love inspires us to have true love, true security, and true faith as well. In this way, God can become a father, a dad whom we truly love.

Let us love the Father more and more, and become people whom He loves more and more.
