A Woman's Best Makeup

Makeup or facial cosmetics are nothing unfamiliar in a woman's life. With makeup, a person can look more beautiful, mature, confident, or more professional. That is why women put on makeup before going to work and attending parties or important events. Showing her best appearance is a sign that she respects the people she is about to meet.

However, did you know, there is makeup that is far more powerful than facial cosmetics? The Bible recommends that this “adornment” be found in a woman. It not only makes others drawn to her, makeup also becomes her strength, making her worthy of respect and pleasing before God.

Your adornment must not be merely outward, with braided hair, gold jewelry, or fine clothes, but let your adornment be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty that comes from a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God's sight. – 1 Peter 3:3-4

Then, how can we have inner adornment like this?

1. Humble

makeup - gkdi 1

Marilyn Monroe said, “A smile is the best makeup any girl can wear.” A smile is a woman's best makeup. However, the Bible sets a far higher standard.

No matter how beautiful and impressive a woman may be, if she becomes proud, she certainly will not be liked. Humility is makeup that is special and does not depend on the product brand or the wearer's age.

Are you a woman who is humble? These are the signs:

  • willing to receive input and not angry when corrected
  • quick to admit mistakes
  • willing to apologize first, even when it is not your fault
  • willing to greet others first
  • wanting to become a better person
  • not looking down on others
  • treating others kindly, whatever their social status
  • realizing that her strength is found only in God
A woman's humility is not merely about being kind to others, but about being aware that her strength comes from God. She does not take credit (taking credit) for everything she is able to do. Instead, she acknowledges that behind all her success, there is God's power at work. She understands that her ability is God's work (2 Corinthians 3:5).

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up. – James 4:10

2. Diligent

Imagine, one day you meet a handsome and attractive man. You then fall in love at first sight. But after getting to know him more closely, you see that this man is lazy. He does not want to work, or his work bears no fruit because of his laziness. Would you still fall in love with or admire this man?

If you are not love-struck (a slave to love), of course you would answer, “No.” The same goes for you. By using the power of makeup (powder, eyeshadow, eyeliner, lipstick, and so on), you may captivate other people's eyes. But if you are not diligent, in other words lazy, your outward beauty will fade instantly.

She watches over the affairs of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. – Proverbs 31:27

Let us grow into diligent women, because that is precious adornment that makes us respected by others.

Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise. Though it has no chief, officer, or ruler, it prepares its food in summer and gathers its provision at harvest.

How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest” and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.

– Proverbs 6:6-11

3. Fear of the Lord

Proverbs 31 lists the criteria of a woman worthy to be a king's wife. Clearly, her qualities are not ordinary. The list makes me so inspired. These are the qualities of a woman I want to have. She is strong, diligent, responsible, loves to give and do good, independent, and has good planning.

However, above all that, this passage closes with a verse about the most important thing a woman needs to have.

Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a wife who fears the LORD shall be praised. Give her the reward of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates! – Proverbs 31:30-31

All the qualities mentioned in Proverbs 31 are indeed extraordinary. But a woman who fears the Lord will surely have all those qualities.

Fear of the Lord is not merely believing in Him, but also:

-

Let us ask ourselves, “Am I someone who fears the Lord?” If not, that is okay. It is not too late. Use the opportunity you have to study the word of God. Make the decision to become someone who fears the Lord. Not only will this become your best makeup it is also a treasure, a source of life, and a source of blessing for your life.

And He will be the stability of your times, an abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is Zion's treasure. – Isaiah 33:6

The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life so that one may turn away from the snares of death. – Proverbs 14:27

Indeed, thus shall be blessed be the man who fears the LORD. – Psalm 128:4 (TL)

Makeup can beautify a woman physically. However, makeup that is true is good character that makes a woman beautiful inside and out. Humility and diligence are some of them, but our best adornment is the fear of the Lord. When we have it, every good quality will follow. So, girls, are you ready to wear this kind of makeup?
