Comfort-Zone Christians

Do you feel that your spiritual life is ordinary, stagnant, without blessing, and showing no growth? Be careful, you may be becoming a Comfort-Zone Christian.

In a comfort zone, we do many things automatically, without needing to think hard or expend much energy, because we are already used to a certain situation. For example, on Sunday we go to church, on Wednesday to a small group meeting, on Saturday to youth service. All of these activities are neatly scheduled and become a routine.

A comfort zone is a dangerous area, because this is where we “do not move forward, but do move backward.” Instead of spiritual growth, we tend to experience decline. And often Christians do not realize that they are trapped in a comfort zone.

So then, what are the signs we need to recognize, and how can we avoid this comfort zone?

Signs of Comfort-Zone Christians

1. Focusing on Yourself

When we are too focused on ourselves, we see everything in terms of the benefit we get. We become busy seeking attention and special treatment. The center of our attention is no longer God, but ourselves.

Outwardly, we are active in churchministries. However, we do them for personal satisfaction, namely to gain recognition and so that we may be blessed by God. We choose only the ministries we like, rather than looking at the needs of the church.

Our relationships with our spiritual brothers and sisters also become shallow and cold, with no tender love. In the end, our actions run contrary to the principle of the Bible, which is to put the interests of the congregation above ourselves.

“… doing nothing out of selfish ambition or empty glory. Rather, in humility let each person regard others as more important than himself.” – Philippians 2:3

When this self-focus appears, remember Jesus and make Him your example. Jesus humbled Himself, came into the world to serve humanity, and was even willing to die to redeem our sins. If Jesus had been a person focused on Himself, surely none of us would have received salvation.

2. Relying on your own strength or experience

Experience is the best teacher; perhaps we often hear this expression. We need the provision of experience so that we can live better. Mistakes can be minimized, so that later we do not fall into the same hole.

Over time, a Christian gains more experience. However, this can become fatal if our spiritual journey depends only on experience, not on God.

We become unwilling to learn from the Word of God and assume that experience alone is enough to face the problems that occur. We think we are the best. Feeling the smartest, and trusting only in our own ability.

If you are experiencing this sign, quickly return to God. Those who rely on God are like trees growing by the water, always flourishing and bearing fruit.

"Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is in the Lord! He is like a tree planted by the water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, nor does it cease to bear fruit.” – Jeremiah 17:7-8

3. Refusing evaluation

When we are trapped in a comfort zone, life becomes a monotonous routine. church, ministry, work, church, ministry, work, and so on every week. We assume we are already on the right track.

Have we ever paused for a moment to evaluate ourselves? Is our Christian life truly right? There are times when we do not feel that our actions are wrong or not in accordance with the will of God. For example, for years we are trapped in the same weakness, falling into the same sin. Our character does not change. Have we examined our hearts with the Bible as the guide?

“Search me, O God, and know my heart, test me and know my thoughts; see whether there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way!” – Psalm 139:23-24

David gives us an example of humility when he came in prayer and asked God to examine his heart. Prayer is the right moment to evaluate ourselves. And this evaluation needs to be done every day, regularly, because spiritual warfare happens at all times. Evaluation can also come through the advice of a spiritual mentor, a friend, or those closest to us.

Consistency is good, but being consistent only in action is not enough. We also need to be consistent in learning and evaluating ourselves. The more spiritually mature we are, the heavier the challenges become. Without inner evaluation, we will not grow.

4. Quick to blame others or circumstances

This is the trap of the comfort zone that most hinders the growth of faith. In this condition, we become immune to rebuke or input. We no longer want to accept criticism and advice.

Jesus answered: "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. – John 9:3

When Jesus and His disciples crossed paths with a blind man, they asked whose fault it was that he had been born blind. But Jesus said it was no one’s fault, but so that the works of God might be displayed.

Sometimes, when we are spiritually weak, it feels easier to blame things outside ourselves. It is because our spiritual mentor is like this, because the pastor is like that, because the congregation is not warm, and various other reasons.

We easily see the weaknesses of other people or the circumstances around us, even blaming God, but neglect to see what God is teaching us. We forget to think about what needs to be corrected and how to correct it.

For that, let us learn from Job, who in his testing and suffering was blamed by his wife (Job 2:9). Yet Job responded with patience, calmness, and the awareness that the process he was going through was permitted by God.

The signs of comfort-zone Christians can happen to anyone. If we experience one or several of these signs, let us immediately improve the quality of our relationship with God. Also, do not hesitate or be ashamed to ask our spiritual mentors for help. May we become Christians who continually grow and bring light to others. God bless you.
