Psalm 119: A Chapter Full of Strength and Comfort

 Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, containing 176 verses. 

This chapter, titled Blessed Are Those Who Live According to the Lord’s Law is very well known. Several hymn lyrics that we often sing come from this chapter. For example, Your Word Is a Lamp to My Feet, which is quoted from Psalm 119:105.

At times, life feels like swallowing a bitter pill. God’s promises seem far away. When hope and reality are not walking in harmony, and the burden I carry feels heavy, I reflect on Psalm 119.

Amazingly, after reading this psalm over and over, I found strength and comfort. I want to share that experience with you.

Let us read Psalm 119, while reflecting on these four things:

1. The source of true happiness is when we hold fast to God’s commands.

“Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, who seek Him with all their heart.” – Psalm 119:2

Some scholars suspect that the writer of Psalm 119 was David. A king who lived in a palace, served by many people, with a great name, and a mighty hero.

Yet this psalm does not say that happy people are only the rich. Those who have no problems and burdens, or who have everything. David actually only experienced true happiness in his life when he held fast to the Lord’s commands and sought Him with all his heart (Psalm 119:57-64).

So, by holding fast to the word and seeking God with your whole heart, regardless of how many problems you have or how heavy your daily struggles are, you are a blessed person! The Lord’s commands are more precious than thousands of pieces of gold and silver (Psalm 119:72).

If you experience difficulty or reluctance in studying the word, pray that the Lord will enable you with the help of Psalm 119:73: “Your hands have made me and formed me; give me understanding, that I may learn Your commandments.”

2. The Lord promises to give strength and comfort.

“This is my comfort in my affliction, that Your promise gives me life.“ – Psalm 119:50

There are times when life does not promise good things. Perhaps you are disappointed in someone who betrayed you. Then you swear never to trust anyone’s promises again.

That attitude is understandable. This happens because we place our hope in something or someone that is neither eternal nor certain.

Yet just this once, try trusting God’s promises. The One who gives these promises is a Being who cannot perish, does not change, and is eternal. More than that, He is the owner of the universe, who loves you so greatly that He was willing to give His life for you (John 3:16).

You will be comforted and given life again by His promises, which are not false promises. God always gives certain hope and never promises something He cannot fulfill (Psalm 119:86a).

3. His commands are an everlasting inheritance.

“Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart.” – Psalm 119:111

Perhaps you feel like you are nobody and have nothing. Yet when you hold fast to His commands, you already possess an inheritance that never runs out! That inheritance will become a source of joy and strength for you.

With God’s guidance, when we live according to His word, we can lead others to salvation—friends, siblings, parents, even children and grandchildren. That is an eternal inheritance for us.

4. The Lord is our hiding place and shield.

“You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word.” – Psalm 119:114

Have you ever felt that you did not know where to pour out your heart? To whom should you run for shelter? Who can you rely on?

I have. I was like a house without supporting pillars that eventually crumbled into pieces. Even though I have family and friends, I know they are also human beings with limitations. Their love is limited. The time and effort they can give me are also limited.

That was when I sought God. The shield of my life. The hiding place where I feel safe and protected.

Who is the hiding place and shield of your life? Is it a boyfriend or girlfriend, a spouse, a career, wealth, parents, close friends, alcohol, or drugs that only bring momentary relief? If you are still searching, find the eternal hiding place and shield of life in the Lord and His word.

Brothers and sisters, the word of the Lord is not a magic spell. Nor is it an ancient book filled with a collection of beautiful words. When you ignore Scripture and leave it as something that merely fills your bookshelf, that word will have no effect at all in your life.

Yet when you begin to read it little by little, one book at a time, day by day, that is when the power of the word becomes evident. Its contents are strength and comfort for living life, as well as God’s promises that you will receive, if you believe.
