A saying goes, "Focus is the key to success and happiness in life."
Those who are called 'successful' are people who are highly focused. They give special attention to the various tasks they have. With that attention, they connect all their activities and make everything run smoothly and finish on time. More than that, they are people who apply that focus not only to their work but also to every kind of challenge in life. But what is focus?
Focus is an act of concentrating on something being done. In other words, "To concentrate on one thing, we must forget the others," or "when we say YES to one thing, then we must say NO to the others."Focus in everything we do every day is very important. So it is also with a person's spiritual life; we need to be focused in our spiritual life.
Spiritual focus
It is said in Hebrews 12: 2"Let us do it with our eyes fixed on Jesus, who leads us in faith and brings our faith to perfection, who, disregarding the shame, endured the cross for the joy set before Him, and now is seated at the right hand of the throne of God."
This verse teaches us to focus. Focus on where? On Jesus, of course!
the phrase "Eyes fixed on Jesus" in the English translation is "Fixing our eyes on Jesus". Every aspect of our life must be in step with what Jesus did: from the way we think, feel, and behave. As Jesus commanded in one of His requirements, namely to follow Him, in other words to become like Him, it is very clear that to follow the Lord we must have focus.
"To concentrate on one thing, we must forget the others"
What can ruin our focus?
Matthew 6:25 "Therefore I tell you: do not worry about your life, about what you will eat or drink, and do not worry about your body, about what you will wear. Is not life more important than food and the body more important than clothing?"It is unavoidable that human beings live not only by the Word of God, but also by physical needs. In the context of Matthew 6:25 above, physical needs are also an important part of our lives that can certainly make us lose our focus on God.
Living in the present age, people compete to make themselves recognized and accepted by society in whatever way possible. People will trouble themselves with things outside spirituality, namely physical needs, more than anything else. This was already predicted by the Bible as written in Matthew 6:25 above. Today people can lose focus because they worry about what they will eat, drink, and wear. Why? Because they trouble themselves over what people will say if they eat or drink something different from most people. The same is true with clothing; in big cities fashion has become a need that can almost be called a primary necessity. These are the kinds of things that often make a person lose focus on what he is about to do.
Therefore the Lord says in Colossians 3:2 "Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth." This verse counters all human thoughts that are sometimes swept along by the current of today's world. That verse directs our minds to keep thinking about the things above.
Romans 12:1 "Therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercy of God I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God: this is your true worship."
It is better for a disciple of Jesus to offer his body as a living and holy sacrifice to the Lord than to be busy with the worries of his life. By focusing on God through His word, a disciple of Jesus will receive extraordinary wisdom.
The Goal of Focus
Romans 12:2 "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what the will of God is: what is good and pleasing to God and perfect."When someone pursues holiness, there will be much renewal within him from the inside out. When we commit ourselves to doing God's will in life, change happens slowly but surely. When we say Yes to God and say No to the world, then the way we see, think, and even feel will be very different. We can clearly distinguish what the will of God is and what is pleasing to Him.
That renewal can only happen if we do one thing: FOCUS!
God bless
