September 2020 Church Theme - Simple & Pure Devotion

The church theme this month is “Sincere and Pure Devotion". However, in the Modern English Version (MEV), it says that the congregation needs to have “simplicity” or simplicity in the Lord.

But I fear that somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve through his trickery, so your minds might be led astray from the simplicity that is in Christ. - 2 Corinthians 11:3 MEV

Doubt was the method the devil used when he deceived Eve so that she ate the fruit she was not supposed to eat. Paul used this illustration to describe the thinking of the Corinthian congregation.

At first, their thinking was so pure and full of zeal when they first received Christ. However, after other teachers appeared, Paul feared that their hearts would drift away from the true concept of Christ, which is simple (simple) and pure (pure).

The word of God is not complicated, and He wants our hearts not to be corrupted by things that are impure.

1. Complicated

Now we can understand why Paul used the illustration of Eve. The devil turned what was originally a simple command, “Do not eat,” into “Didn’t God say you must not eat that fruit, or you will die? You will not die; instead, you will become like God!” He made a mindset that was originally simple become complicated, causing people to just go along with it without thinking it through. 

2. Corrupted

Another thing the devil did was make Eve’s motivation no longer pure. The devil misdirected Eve’s focus from being Adam’s helper to becoming someone more than just a helper, even wanting to become like God. Eve, who had originally seen the fruit as forbidden fruit, began to see the fruit as good, pleasing to the eye, and desirable because it gave understanding. A pure heart became corrupted.

This is what Paul was concerned about for the congregation in Corinth, using the illustration of Eve. He feared that their thinking about Christ would become complicated and corrupted. Many Christian doctrines make the word of God so complicated, even though God’s commands and word are so simple.

We also need to keep examining our hearts, whether our hearts have become so corrupted that we no longer think with God’s way of thinking, but are more interested in our own understanding. Let us look at God’s word with simplicity, and let us keep striving to live purely in the Lord.
