My Life Is Not a Burden: Living Through What We Dislike

Once I read a book containing the life stories of people who eventually got to do the things they loved in life. Whatever form their dreams took painting on the beach, becoming a nurse, teaching children, working in a social home they had succeeded in achieving them. Their success stirred envy in my heart. I thought, “When will I be able to enjoy life and do what I love?”

Perhaps right now you are struggling with your life. Whether it is related to work, responsibilities, or circumstances, you truly do not like it or may even hate going through it. If you could choose, that situation would not be your choice.

As Christians, how should we respond to a life that seems far from ideal? Is it possible to love a life that does not align with our hopes?

Let God’s Will Be Done

He went on a little farther and fell facedown in prayer, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.” – Matthew 26:39

I remember a season when I hated my life. Telling God that this was not the life I wanted to live. Wanting a normal life where my children could have a whole family. I felt like rebelling, screaming at the top of my lungs over this injustice. I was angry. Why did God allow all this to happen to me?

If right now you are experiencing bitterness toward life you feel alone, afraid, confused, unable to see a way out know this: God understands and feels what you feel!

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus felt such overwhelming sorrow that He wanted to die. He prayed three times. The same prayer. The same request. He expressed to His Father that He did not want to go through that suffering. Jesus hoped He had another choice. If God allowed it, it would be better if the cross He had to bear could simply be taken away.

Yet at the end of His prayer, Jesus said that whatever happened, let only the will of God the Father be done, not His own will.

When you do not like your path in life, your circumstances, or your work, learn to accept the life God has given you. Beyond that, pray about it. Perhaps God wants you to surrender and grow through this situation. Or perhaps God has deliberately placed this thing you dislike before you so that you will fight to change your circumstances, whether that is your work or your plans. Whatever it is, live this life with joy and do not complain.

What matters most is not what happens, but how you respond to what comes in life. As you continue seeking a way out, do what you need to do right now as well as you can and bring your unrest to God in prayer. Let the will of the Lord be done. Then everything will be beautiful in His time, according to His plan.

Keep Giving Thanks

Jesus answered them, "Do not grumble.” – John 6:43

When I was reading the book I mentioned above, I was burdened by work. Ever since managing the family business, every day I have had to wake up at three in the morning. When evening came, I became stressed, imagining that I had to wake up before dawn. In fact, nighttime was the time I enjoyed the most, but now the night had become a dread for me.

After finishing the book, I reflected. How happy people are when they get to do something they love. And how miserable people are when in life they are forced to do something they do not like, because that is the same as not having a life at all.

From that moment on, I decided to learn to like what I do, and in this case: my work. I did not want my happiness to be stolen because of work. Even though life has not yet matched my hopes, I want to live it without feeling forced.

Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. – 1 Thessalonians 5:18

A joyful heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit. – Proverbs 15:13

If you keep grumbling, you will never be happy. You will keep feeling bored, burdened, and irritated. But when you live life with joy, God will bless  what you do.

Learn to love what you do, and all that boredom, burden, and anger will fade, replaced by enthusiasm and joy. Why? Because you get your life back!

Sometimes we focus too much on what is missing from life and forget to be grateful for what we have. Maybe you are incredibly busy, but you are able to pay your bills every month. You are in excellent health so you can keep training and developing your talents. You do not have a spouse yet, but your friends love you. Keep looking for things that make you grateful and joyful. That way, life is no longer a burden, but a meaningful process that you enjoy.

Do It for God

Lastly, if you still find it difficult to go through your current life situation, work, or responsibilities, remember that you do all of it for the Lord. This will grow willingness and commitment within you because you are doing it not for people, but for God Himself.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as for the Lord and not for men. – Colossians 3:23

Keep going! You can do it!
