Prayer Before Exams - Ways and How

Five prayer strategies before exams that can make a difference.

Exam season is coming! Midterms, final exams, or graduation exams, all of them will come for those of us who are still pursuing an education. A few years ago I experienced a panic attack during an exam, which resulted in me almost failing. We need every bit of help we can get. But can prayer before an exam make a difference? If so, how? We will look at five strategies that will help you be ready when facing exams.

Stop.

Put down your textbook, close your laptop, and turn off your phone. Take your Bible, open the Word, and quiet your heart. You do not need to pray for a long time, just 5 minutes can make a big impact on your mind and heart. A deliberate act is needed to pray, no matter whether it is long or short. The first step is to stop what you are doing and pray.

Believe.

Jesus knows what you are feeling. He said, “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) Jesus Himself once felt pressure like we do during exams. “and one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question to test Him:” (Matthew 22:35) Here Jesus was in a pressured position, just like us. Make the decision to trust Him, and when you pray, He will understand.

Focus.

Do what David did, “I have set the LORD always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.” (Psalm 16:8) Make the decision to focus on God in your prayer, not on yourself or the problem you are facing. You will feel what David felt, “Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices; my body also will rest secure;” (Psalm 16:9)

Ask.

You can ask God for whatever you need. Is it energy, readiness, concentration, or peace? Whatever it is, know that He cares and listens. May we ask for His help so that our exams go smoothly? Why not! Will God Himself come and do the questions for you? Of course not, because we would not learn anything. But God is with you. Ask Him for what you need.

Give thanks.

With faith, give thanks to God in advance for His help to you. (what He gives may not always be what you want). You will have, “The peace of God, which is beyond all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)

Take one minute for each of these points, and you will have a five-minute prayer that will calm your mind. You may pray longer, but if not, you will be more aware of the presence, power, and love of God.

God bless,

Malcolm
