When Was the Last Time You Showed Gratitude to Your Wife?

Showing gratitude to your wife is something important that husbands need to practice every day. It is one of the nutrients that keeps your marriage healthy. There are many ways to express your appreciation to your wife, from words to a number of concrete actions you do for her.

Husbands, in the same way, live wisely with your wives, as with the weaker vessel! Honor them as fellow heirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered. – 1 Peter 3:7

More often we hear the Word about how a wife should honor her husband. However, the Apostle Peter wrote that a husband must honor his wife as his life partner. The act of showing gratitude to your wife is a form of appreciation for God's grace.

You can do the following things as an expression of gratitude to your wife:

1. Give Her a Break from Routine

Besides being a homemaker, your wife may also work or run a business. This is not an easy task. Give your wife a chance to rest so that she can enjoy a little personal time and recharge her energy.

If your children are still young and your wife takes care of them on her own, help her watch the children for an hour or two. Another example, when your wife wants to go out with her friends but there is housework that needs to be done (for example, washing clothes), help her do it.

As husbands, we must be willing to sacrifice for our wives, considering that the Lord also sacrificed for His church (Ephesians 5:28-30). Even if you only help for a short time or in a small way, it means a great deal to her. After resting, your wife can return to her activities feeling more refreshed, enthusiastic, and happy.

2. Give a Romantic Surprise

A romantic surprise you can give your wife on special occasions, such as her birthday or your anniversary. Make breakfast for her, or buy her favorite meal for dinner together.

You can also buy something she has long wanted, something she may be reluctant to buy for herself because she is thinking about the family's needs. This is the right opportunity to express your gratitude, namely by making her happy.

3. Be a Good Listener and Discussion Partner

There are times when a woman simply wants to be heard.  What do you usually do when your wife is talking? Do you listen to her fully, or while busily chatting on your phone?

On the other hand, what do you want from your wife when you are talking? Surely you want her to listen attentively, don't you? So, try to do the same. Listen to what your wife says without being distracted by other activities, such as playing games, surfing the internet, reading the newspaper, watching TV, and so on.

When discussing something, value her opinion. Try to give a response that is not reactive, emotional, or indifferent by only saying, “Whatever you want.” You are her life partner, and a good partner will honor and value his companion.

4. Speak Words That Build Up

Use good words such as “please” when you ask your wife to do something. Say thank you for her willingness to do it, regardless of the result. Learn to admit it and apologize when you make a mistake. And, do not forget to give sincere praise for what your wife has done.

5. Be a Good Father

If you have already become a father, make time for your children, such as praying or playing together. Just as with your wife, give yourself fully when interacting with your children, not half-heartedly while playing with a gadget, for example. Your wife will certainly be happy if her husband is close to the children and is a father who is involved in their lives.

6. Make Time for the Two of You

After having children, automatically your time with your wife will be divided. However, this should not become a reason not to enjoy time alone together. Set aside special time for your wife, for example by going on a date together, watching a movie at the cinema, strolling around the mall, or doing hobbies and sports together.

7. Ask How She Feels

terima kasih - gkdi 7

Even though it looks simple, asking is one way to show care. When seeing his wife doing something, a husband sometimes acts indifferent or just lets it be because he feels his wife is able to do it herself. In fact, his wife may feel reluctant to ask for help or may not realize that she actually needs help. Rather than leaving it alone, you can be more caring by asking, “What can I do to help?”

When you feel or see that your wife is not acting as usual, for example looking downcast, do not just stay silent. Rather than guessing or becoming suspicious, it is better to ask what she is thinking or feeling. The point is, you need to be sensitive to your wife's feelings and always remember that confirmation is better than assumption.

A wife is a beautiful gift from God to her husband. As husbands, we should not view this gift as something free of charge. Show your gratitude to your wife by doing wise things that can preserve the marriage relationship, things worth striving for with perseverance and sacrifice. May God bless your marriage!

Husbands, love your wives just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her. – Ephesians 5:25
