Mobile Handwashing Stations for a Healthier Life

Beginning in the city of Wuhan in China, the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) spread to various countries around the world and caused the emergence of COVID-19. On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic. This condition clearly must not be taken lightly, because only a few diseases recorded throughout history have been classified as pandemics.

Considering that no medicine or vaccine had yet been found to treat this disease, the Covid-19 patients who managed to recover were those who had good immune systems. However, as the saying goes, “Prevention is better than cure,” so the best way is to take various preventive measures rather than focus on treatment. According to the WHO, one way to prevent exposure to this virus is to wash your hands with soap and running water more often, especially after physical contact with other people or public facilities.

In response to this appeal, an idea emerged from Mr. Charles Ham, director of HOPE Indonesia, to create the mobile handwashing station concept and program. The goal was to provide handwashing stations in public places, such as markets, neighborhood halls, urban village offices, community health centers, and others. In this way, people could wash their hands more often, and it was hoped that this would help prevent them from contracting the coronavirus.

Gereja Kristus di Indonesia, represented by GEM Ministry, donated 2 mobile handwashing stations to the Plumpang and Cilincing areas. On March 31, 2020, the mobile handwashing station in Cilincing was handed over to Mr. Nasikin, the Head of RW 001, Kalibaru Urban Village, Cilincing. 

We hope that with these mobile handwashing stations, the spread of the coronavirus can be slowed, especially in the areas we have supported. In addition, indirectly, people are also being educated to care more about personal cleanliness and health. This will certainly be a good long-term investment for them. 

For those of us who do not have access to mobile handwashing stations or public sinks, do not be discouraged. Let us continue to maintain cleanliness by washing our hands often, taking care of our health, eating nutritious food, getting enough sleep, and getting enough sunlight. And most importantly, do not forget to take care of your spiritual health as well! Keep your spirit up!
