Dating is an important phase in a relationship, where you can get to know your partner more deeply than when you are just friends. If you are serious about marriage, you will certainly build a dating relationship that is also serious. You will not waste your time going through it with someone you do not want as a life partner. The dating phase gives you the opportunity to understand your partner's strengths and weaknesses before you decide to marry.
However, there is no law that regulates how Christians shoulddate. As a result, we often imitate the world's style of dating which tends to be unhealthy and brings more negative risks on the journey toward the covenant of marriage.
So, what does a style of dating that is blessed by God look like?
3 Principles of Dating According to the Bible
There are many principles in the Bible that can be applied in Christian dating relationships. Here is a style of dating that is healthy so your relationship will always be blessed by God and, surely, endure all the way to marriage.
1. Act according to its proper time
“For everything there is a season, and a time for whatever is under heaven.” – Ecclesiastes 3:1
Often we do not realize it, or we get carried away by intense feelings of love, so that we do not place ourselves in the proper position in the relationship. For example, you may only be dating but already acting like a husband and wife. As a result, we fall into sin and become separated from God.
Therefore, first of all, you need to realize what stage your relationship is currently in. Are you friends, close friends, dating, or already husband and wife? Every phase has its own boundaries. If you are dating, act like you are dating. Honor your partner's purity and stay away from temptations that will make you fall into sin.
2. Be yourself
“If yes, let your answer be: yes; if no, let your answer be: no. Anything more than that comes from the evil one.” – Matthew 5:37
Do you always want to appear spiritual in your boyfriend's or girlfriend's eyes? Do you want to look strong, as if you have no weaknesses or struggles? If so, stop doing that. From now on, learn to be yourself in front of your partner. Do not be afraid that he or she will dislike you or leave you because you are not a perfect person.
There are two benefits you gain from being yourself.
First, you do not let the devil live within you. There is no opportunity for him to manipulate you with the temptation of keeping your reputation looking good (keeping up appearances). As though by hiding your struggles, you will look perfect or spiritual. This is no different from lies or deceit. Remember, one lie will drag you into another lie.
Second, you come to know your boyfriend's or girlfriend's character more deeply. By being yourself, you can actually see the response when he or she learns about your imperfections. Surely we all want a partner who faithfully helps us overcome our weaknesses or shortcomings, don't we?
3. Involve your spiritual mentor
“Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but where there are many counselors, there is safety.” – Proverbs 11:14
Lastly, always involve your spiritual mentor in your dating relationship. Tell them about your progress. Ask for their advice about everything that happens in the relationship. The involvement of a spiritual mentor is important to guard your heart and your partner's from compromising with sin, making sure you are on the right path, namely salvation.
So, are you ready to look forward to the happy day with your partner and enjoy God's blessings? Do not forget to apply a healthy style of dating starting now, okay.
May the Lord Jesus bless you.
