Maximize the Power of Prayer in Your Life

Speaking of prayer, I remember an incident at the end of 2004, when I made a dream list for 2005 in my diary. One of the items on that dream list was ‘returning to the working world.’ I wanted to work at a large company, earn enough to meet the needs of my two children, who were still toddlers at the time, and have weekends off.

After that, I brought those dreams to God in prayer every day. As 2005 began, just a few days after the new year, I received an answer exactly as I wanted!

But what about prayers whose answers never seem to come? Do you feel burdened when you come to God, because prayer has become a routine obligation with no clear sense of when it will be answered? How great is the power of prayer? What kind of prayer is answered? And what things can we pray for?

Do Not Underestimate the Power of Prayer

Elijah was a human being just like us, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 5:18 Then he prayed again, and the heavens gave rain and the earth produced its fruit. – James 5:17-18  

Often we think of prayer merely as a formality showing that we have come to God. It becomes a daily routine we carry out without realizing how important it is and how great its power is in our lives.

Yet the Bible shows how prayer is able to change things that seem impossible. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, we see much evidence of how prayer brings victory, from the time the people of Israel faced their enemies to the time when the apostles and the first disciples experienced struggle and suffering in proclaiming the gospel.

Why is it said that earnest prayer has very great power (James 5:16)? Because God listens to every prayer. 

Communication Across Worlds

Perhaps some of us do not realize the power we have when we pray. If we understood that power, surely we would pray more often and more earnestly. We would sacrifice time and energy, even our own pleasures, just to pray.

While He was praying, the appearance of His face changed and His clothes became dazzling white. – Luke 9:29

“While I was speaking in prayer, Gabriel came swiftly flying toward me...” – Daniel 9:21

Do you know that when you pray, you enter His kingdom and are on a different frequency from the frequency of the world? You are communicating with the most powerful Being on the face of the earth. You stand face to face with Him, in His kingdom. When you pray, God and all the Kingdom of Heaven respond to your prayer.

Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer from this place. – 2 Chronicles 7:15

Pray for Everything

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything let your requests be made known to God through prayer and supplication with thanksgiving. – Philippians 4:6

Pray about anything, when facing problems of any kind. When you pray, the peace of God will guard your heart and mind (Philippians 4:7). You will become calm, not worried, stronger and braver than you think.

Prayer does not have to be only for the big and important things in life. It is all right if we want to pray about small things or things that seem trivial.

When your prayer is not answered, do not feel that God is not listening. It takes time until God gives an answer. One day, you will see how God grants your hope. Prayer can change your life, your parents, and your friends’, even your superior or your boss. What you need to do is wait and keep believing.

God Answers Prayers That Accord with His Will

And this is the confidence we have before Him: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. – 1 John 5:14

The power of a prayer does not depend on who offers it or how beautiful the words are. So it does not mean that if an apostle or pastor prays, it is more powerful than when an ordinary person prays. Its power does not lie in the person, but in God’s own power. No matter who is praying, how loudly the prayer is spoken, or whatever its purpose, as long as it is in accordance with God’s will, He will answer it with His power!

Now that you understand the meaning of prayer and how great its power is, do you still see praying as merely a formality and a routine?

Prayer is able to change many things. Prayer is our weapon for living through a harsh life full of struggle in this world. Without it, we will be weak and become easy prey for the devil. Let us keep praying, persevere, and believe!
