Warning: Lack of Living Water Can Cause Spiritual Dehydration

How long can a human survive without water? Scientific observations say the range is around three to seven days (if the air is cool or there is no exposure to sunlight). In hot weather, an adult can lose 1–2 liters of sweat in an hour. By the time we feel thirsty, we are actually already mildly dehydrated. Symptoms of dehydration begin with lethargy, dizziness, fatigue, a rapid heartbeat, shallow breathing, and can progress to kidney failure and death.

If water plays an important role in maintaining our body’s optimal function and health, imagine how crucial Living Water is for our spiritual body.

Jesus and Living Water

And on the last day, the climax of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink!" (John 7:37)

When we are thirsty, logic tells us we will look for the nearest source of water. Have you ever tried replacing water intake with sweet tea or fruit juice? After all, both contain water. Yet that thirst will not be fully satisfied, because after drinking, a sweet taste remains on the tongue that needs to be ‘rinsed’ away with water.

In our spiritual life, we also need to be sensitive in recognizing the thirst to be close to God.

The question is, do we satisfy that thirst by coming to the right source, namely Jesus Himself? Or are we busy looking for it through other things that only provide short-term satisfaction?

Symptoms of Spiritual Dehydration

Here are two symptoms of spiritual dehydration and ways to deal with them:

1. Dry and Withered

"Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." (John 7:38)

If we believe in Jesus, then living water flows within our hearts. We are directly connected to the Source of Living Water Himself and have a personal relationship with Him every day.

When that connection is broken, we will experience spiritual dryness. We may find it hard to hear God’s voice. If our quiet time or Bible reading moments begin to feel like mere routine, those are signs of a dry heart.

Next steps: Examine whether our spiritual activities and ministry are enough to satisfy our spiritual thirst. Are we like a tree planted by streams of water? Could it be that we are tired and withered, no longer bearing the fruits of the Spirit? Are we still connected to Jesus, the Source of Living Water?

By maintaining our relationship with God, not only are our hearts refreshed, we also have the energy and wisdom to be a blessing to others.

"He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season, and whose leaf does not wither; whatever he does prospers." (Psalm 1:3)

2. Shrinking

One effect of severe dehydration is the shrinking of the body’s cells. Shrinking in a broader context can mean a condition that is declining, weakening, or deteriorating.

Besides a dry and withered heart, a broken relationship with Jesus will weaken our spiritual body. We may no longer consider God’s word important. We may even begin to draw near to sin.

Feeling bored and tired is human, so do not worry. There are several solutions to restore freshness to our spiritual body.

Next steps:

  1. Apply a variety of places or methods so that your quiet time becomes a meaningful and unique daily experience.
  2. Join a retreat, or spiritual deepening such as a Bible discussion meeting.
  3. Discuss it privately with a brother or sister so they can help pray or offer advice.

Friend, do not take the signs of a dry heart lightly. Knowing the symptoms of spiritual dehydration can help us seek help as early as possible from our community. Stay connected at all times to the Source of Living Water, and surely we will not experience spiritual dehydration.

"Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in the LORD! He will be like a tree planted by the waters, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when scorching heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in a year of drought, nor does it cease to bear fruit." (Jeremiah 17:7-8)
