Is There Hope If I Was Born with Limitations?

A body with limitations is certainly not something anyone hopes for. Everyone wants to be born with a complete and perfect. Why? Because in that way, a person is free to do whatever they want. Also, a perfect body means feeling whole and valuable.

Even so, there are some people who are born with limitations. They may be born without sight, hearing, or even without hands or feet. People born this way are then looked down on because of the limitations they have. 

Perhaps you are one of those people.

But is that view really true? Do limitations determine our value as human beings? Most importantly, is there hope in the midst of such a limited life?

Nick Vujicic Goes Beyond All Limits

To answer that question, let us get to know one name: Nick Vujicic.

Nick Vujicic was born in Melbourne, Australia, on December 14, 1982. He has tetra-amelia syndrome, which caused him to be born without arms and legs.

Of course, it was not easy for Nick to accept his physical condition. His physical activities were limited, because it was difficult for him to function like a normal person. He had to struggle even just to move from one place to another, for example. At one point he experienced depression because he could not accept himself. He always asked why he was different from his friends.

But in the end, Nick was able to get through those dark times. He believed that God still had a beautiful plan for his life. Nick was also inspired by his family and friends who helped him so much. Nick did not give up because of his limitations; he became a speaker and evangelist who has inspired many people around the world.

Should We Give Up in Our Limitations?

Some of you may have been born like Nick. Perhaps your body or mind is limited, whatever the cause. It is natural if you feel sad and down because of what you are going through. But is it right to keep grieving and lamenting the weaknesses that exist?

Of course not. No matter how limited you are, God still considers you precious. He does not care about what you have or do not have; He only cares that you are His creation, and you were created as something truly precious. 

Here are things you can reflect on, so that you can see yourself in a better way.

1. God Created You Good As You Are

“For You formed my inward parts; You knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Psalm 139 : 13. 

The verse above clearly says that God has formed a person since the womb. What does He think about His creation? That all His creation is good (Gen. 1:31)! This certainly includes you. He considers you good and perfect as you are.

No matter what your shortcomings are, no matter how people see you, that does not lessen your perfection in God’s eyes. Your existence or creation is good. Good in the eyes of the perfect God. As it is said in Psalm 13:4, “I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well.”

2. Focus on How God Sees You

Like it or not, the world is less friendly toward people with limitations. This is because those with physical limitations are seen as different from those who are born whole.

By contrast, that is not what God says. 1 Samuel 16:7 says, But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or his tall stature, because I have rejected him. For God does not see as man sees; man looks at what is before the eyes, but the LORD looks at the heart.” 

Samuel thought that the next king of Israel would come from David’s older brothers, who looked perfect outwardly. But God rejected them all and chose David. Why? Because God was far more interested in David’sheart, which was inclined toward Him.

Should this not strengthen you? You may take pride in the fact that God looks at your heart, your attitude, and who you truly are. Not merely at outward appearance. You are precious, whatever you may look like in the eyes of the world. Whatever your limitations are.

In short, you may rejoice because God is more interested in your heart than your physical body. 

3. Believe That God Has a Plan

For people who feel limited, it can seem that their future is over. There is no more hope. There is nothing more they can do.

You may feel that way, and that is valid indeed. But there is good news for you. Do you believe that God is not finished with you? As it is written in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for peace and not for disaster, to give you a future full of hope.” 

When those thoughts above come back to trouble you, let us keep believing that God still has a plan in your life. He has a master plan for every person’s life, including yours. He never plans evil; only goodness and hope.

Are you willing to believe, in the midst of all your limitations, that God still has a beautiful plan in this life?

A Limited Body Is Not a Limitation

Being born with physical limitations is not the end of everything. God still values you, God sees who you truly are, and God has a beautiful plan for your life.

A limited condition is not a limit to what you can do. Believe in God’s plan and love, and you will surely be able to rise above your limitations!
