Great Because Trained: Is Your Talent Small? Think Again!

Whenever we see someone achieve something great, we usually say, “They have talent.” Or, “They succeeded because they developed their talent.” We might also say, “Because of that talent, their life is much better now,” and so on.

Perhaps we feel discouraged because our talent seems like nothing compared to others in the same field or profession. But does that mean we have already hit our limit? That God measured out our talent only that much and nothing more can be done with it?

What Is Talent?

According to a Bible dictionary, one talent is equal to 3,000 shekels, about 34 kilograms. One talent was worth six thousand denarii, and one denarius was a laborer’s daily wage in Jesus’ time. So, one talent was very valuable. When someone manages their talent properly, not only are they blessed, but so are the people around them.

For example, I was given a talent for writing and earn a fairly large income as a writer. That income is a blessing for me, my wife, and my in-laws. I have been able to stay in this profession for years because I keep practicing my writing. And I am not allergic to criticism. When my writing is rejected, I find out why, then try to write even better.

3 Secret Keys to Developing Talent

Here are three effective keys so that our talent becomes even greater. First, read the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30.

1. Carry It Out Wholeheartedly

Matthew 25:16 says: “At once the servant who had received the five talents went and put the money to work and gained five more.”

I often meet people who complain that their lives are unsuccessful. Their lives are hard, nothing ever changes, because God did not give them talent. This is mistaken thinking. God gives every person talent. Some receive one, some two, or five. Let’s say we were given only one, but when we diligently work and learn, we will surely get positive results. Our talent will also grow.

The problem is that laziness makes a person unwilling to discover the potential of their talent. Even if they know it, they do not want to go through the process. They want immediate great results without hardship. Yet the best results are gained only by people who persevere. By those who fail again and again, but rise again. Who are willing to learn from mistakes and strive to think of positive and creative solutions.

Laziness is sin. So, if we are lazy in using our talent, we sin and deliberately dishonor God.

2. Be Faithful in Small Things

Matthew 25:16 says: “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s joy.’”

If God gives us something trivial and the pay is small, be grateful and do it wholeheartedly.

In the first year after I became a disciple of Jesus, God trained me through a small thing, namely becoming the one who washed church members’ motorcycles. When the leaders meeting after the service, I washed their motorcycles. The water was free because I used the pastor’s house supply. During that period, I could clean two to three motorcycles. Even though the pay was small, I tried to wash them as cleanly as possible.

At another time God gave me a small job, handing out tutoring brochures in front of a school. I still did it wholeheartedly. When we are faithful in small things, we will be trusted with great things and be able to do them.

3. Be a Useful Person

Matthew 25:30 says: “And throw that worthless servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

God wants whatever talent He entrusts to us to be used for spiritual things. For example, if we are good at speaking and persuading people, use it to speak about spiritual matters. Things that motivate people to do spiritual things and study the Bible. Do not use it instead to spread hoaxes and gossip, or to provoke people into sin.

The servant who was entrusted with one talent was called lazy and wicked. Because he knew what his master wanted, but “deliberately” disappointed him by hiding his talent in the ground. Do not complain, envy, or be angry when God blesses people who diligently persevere until their lives become successful and respected by others. Of course, those of us who are lazy will keep living in hardship and be looked down on by others.

God wants each of His children to grow, to have a blessed life, and to become a blessing to many people. All of this can happen when we are willing to obey and do His will. One way is by valuing the talent God has entrusted to us and using it as well as possible. If we do not yet know what our talent is, find out. If we already know, develop it by continually training it.
