God's Work Behind an Impossible Dream

In pursuing our dreams, we may face challenges that delay our journey, things that make our dreams seem impossible to attain. Yet human limitations cannot hinder God's beautiful plan. 

This is what Mega, a sister in the Medan Congregation. After finishing elementary school, the youngest daughter of five siblings was at risk of dropping out because of her family's financial limitations. Thankfully, one of her older siblings, who had already become a disciple of Jesus, was willing to help her so she could stay in school.

Being aware of her family's financial condition, which had caused her four siblings to drop out of school, became a burden of its own for young Mega. On top of that, she often received ridicule from her family. This made her keep to herself during junior high. She only made friends with smart students and communicated only for important matters. Her academic performance was good, but her character was poor because she liked to rebel, was stubborn, and was difficult to advise.  

After Mega joined Bible Study, many of her perspectives on life changed, especially regarding her relationship with others. After graduating from junior high, Mega gave herself to become a true Christian. 

In high school, Mega finally experienced the beauty of school life. She had many friends, and they could see her integrity as a disciple of Christ. People knew her not only as an achiever, but also as Mega who was friendly and willing to get along with anyone. 

As graduation approached, चिंता about the future began to trouble Mega's heart and mind. Several times she failed the entrance exams through scholarship tracks at a number of private universities. The SBMPTN track (Joint Selection for Admission to State Universities) and civil service school admissions also did not bear fruit.

As a result, Mega was disappointed in herself. She felt useless, like a failure, and became afraid to dream. Belittling words from her family further weakened her mentally. Her frustration then led Mega to begin questioning God's justice.

During this difficult period, Mega received much input and support from her spiritual mentor and her friends in Teens Ministry. It was not easy for her to accept every piece of advice, but the perseverance, patience, and love of those closest to her helped Mega learn to accept her circumstances.

A few months later, Mega and her sibling decided to leave the family home and live in a boarding house. While taking a sewing course, Mega helped her sibling do bead embroidery. But once again, obstacles came: Mega had to stop the course because the family's finances worsened and their father suffered a stroke that was mild.

Praise God, on the very day she stopped the course, Mega got a job at a cell phone shop. Besides having a work schedule that was conducive to her ministry, Mega could study in between her duties at the shop to prepare for the university entrance exam.

There were times when Mega felt lazy and weary of her life. Her spirit slackened, her struggle was inconsistent, and she often wondered, “What is the point of continuing to study?” However, Yeremia 29:11 strengthened Mega with the assurance that God had a plan behind everything that happened. She was also surrounded by people who always gave her support and a positive influence.

On July 9, 2019, Mega was declared accepted into one of Medan's state universities through the Bidikmisi Scholarship. Now she is just waiting for one more step so she can pursue higher education without being burdened by large tuition fees. 

Mega is very grateful because her experiences over the past year have shaped her heart and character so that she has become a person who surrenders and trusts in the way God works. She now relies more on God, not on her own strength, in all things. Day by day, Mega becomes more convinced that what seems impossible, God is able to turn something impossible for humans into something possible to attain. And God's help will come in His time. Amen.
