"God My Source of Strength": Here's What the Lyrics Mean

“God is my source of strength and my portion, forever, forever.” Those are the closing words of one of my favorite worship songs. This song is usually sung in church just before the Word of God is preached.
Yes, the song is titled God My Source of Strength. With a fairly fast tempo, it can stir the adrenaline of those who hear it. Anxiety can melt away when we truly listen to the lyrics of this song. I personally feel reminded, The Lord is the source of my strength..
But what is no less interesting is the lyrics. The lyrics of God My Source of Strength are so deep and have much to teach us.
Lyrics of the Song God My Source of Strength
So what exactly are the lyrics of “God My Source of Strength” like? Let us dive in more deeply!Even though not all of us are gifted to be singers, there is nothing wrong with studying the lyrics of this song.
Only You are mine in heaven
There is nothing I desire on earth but You alone
I do not rely on my own strength
But this much is certain, You remain forever
God my source of strength
God my source of strength
God my source of strength and my portion
Forever
Simple and beautiful, is it not? Perhaps we often sing it in church. It feels like we have praised the Lord with this song many times.
Believing That God Is the Source of Our Strength
Yet, more than just a song, this song also gives inspiration and strength. It is as if it tells us that the Lord truly has power and is able to help.
This time we will try to understand more deeply, why God My Source of Strength is so strengthening and inspiring.
1. Only the Lord Is Ours
This song opens with the line, “Only You are mine in heaven. There is nothing I desire on earth but You alone.”
If I may reflect on the opening lyrics of this song, they describe someone who is going through struggles and challenges. When that person is under such pressure, a conviction arises, “Only with the Lord is my desire fulfilled. The life of this world and all its difficulties are only temporary; I want to be with the Lord one day.”
Does the above also represent our condition today?az
We were created by the Lord in this world without even a single thread. One day, we will return to Him without bringing anything at all. If not a single possession will we take to heaven, should we not treasure the Lord as our greatest treasure?
Even if we had nothing else in this world, we would still have a treasure beyond price on this earth. As the title of the point above says, the Lord is ours. He will accompany every step we take.
Psalm 73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
With the Lord as your possession, you can certainly feel more secure in living this life.
2. The Lord Gives Strength
The next lyric, “I do not rely on my own strength. But this much is certain, You remain forever.”
Have you ever leaned on your own strength? I certainly have. With a bachelor's degree from a well-known university, and good academic grades, I believed I would live a successful life. I believed I would live an easy and comfortable life, just as I dreamed.
But in reality, my job did not match my expectations. I was so pressured that I felt I had nothing left. That lowest point awakened me. I cannot rely on myself. I need the Lord. I need strength from Him.
Perhaps you have experienced what I felt. When life does not go according to our dreams, when we are at our lowest point, we finally realize it. Only the Lord is the source of our strength.
When life's challenges crash in, waves of layoffs strike, and economic recession looms, it is so easy to despair. But should we give up? Certainly not! There is the Lord who will accompany our every step.
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
3. Glorify the Lord in Our Lives
“God my source of strength. God my source of strength. God my source of strength and my portion, forever.” Those are the closing lyrics. What can we learn?
When we lean on the Lord, we will be motivated to glorify Him in this life. People around us can see and feel that there is a difference in our attitude toward life. Our zeal and surrender will shine outward. They can feel the radiance of our joy in the Lord.
Psalm 86:12 I will give thanks to You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify Your name forever;
For this reason, we need to have genuine faith in the Lord. How? By truly living out what He has taught every day. Thus says Matthew 7:24-25,
Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. Then the rain fell and the floods came, and the winds struck that house, but it did not fall because it had been founded on the rock.
The name of the Lord will be glorified if we truly stand on the Lord and live in a different way. How are you living today?
The Lord Will Give Strength
In every situation, in joy and in sorrow, let us believe that “God is My Source of Strength.” Of course we must believe that we will be able to face the storms of life. However, that does not mean relying on ourselves. There is a power without limit. The power that created the whole universe. The power that created and appointed the boundaries of human dwelling places. He is our Almighty God.
Therefore, let us lean on the Lord's extraordinary strength! He will give strength and hope.
