Becoming Christians of Integrity

A person's integrity is closely tied to their true identity.

Every aspect of their life, both internal and external, moves in harmony, without falsehood or hypocrisy. In other words, people of integrity are those who have harmony in their thoughts, feelings, actions, and words.

For Christians, integrity is inseparable from their spiritual life. A life of integrity is a picture of the life of believers, reflected in their daily attitude, whether in public or when alone.

The Bible shows that people of integrity have a close relationship and fellowship with God. For example, Noah, Abraham, David, and Paul. They always sought to live rightly, kept on learning, and became faithful doers of the Word.

So, how can we become people who have integrity?

 

3 Bible Figures with High Integrity

Let us learn from these three Bible figures who upheld the value of integrity in their lives.

1. Joseph – Integrity Means Honesty (Genesis 39:1-23)

After his master saw that the LORD was with Joseph and that the LORD gave success to everything he did, Joseph found favor in his master's eyes, and he was allowed to serve him; Joseph was put in charge of his household, and everything he owned was entrusted to Joseph's care. – Genesis 39:3-4

"... even in this house there is no one greater than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great wickedness and sin against God?" – Genesis 39:9

Because of his integrity, Joseph was trusted by his master to manage his house and assets. With such great authority, Joseph had many opportunities to abuse his position. However, out of reverence for the Lord, he refused when his master's wife invited him into adultery and chose to flee, even accepting the risk of being falsely accused and imprisoned.

How often do we belittle or set aside integrity in decision-making? Are we willing to sacrifice an offer or a shortcut that seems tempting for the sake of saving our future? Or do we prioritize momentary pleasure that will bring bad consequences later on?

If every morning you are able to wake up, breathe, and go about your activities, it means you are still being given the opportunity to live a better life. So, use that by making right decisions in the Lord.

When all your colleagues misuse company funds or property, will you follow along? As a leader, do you truly prioritize the welfare of your employees, or does it remain only a talking point in your speeches at office events?

Integrity applies not only in a profession. If you are a student, you must also have integrity, for example by being honest in filling out attendance lists and writing your thesis (not plagiarizing or paying someone else to do it). In relationships, it means you do not say “A” to one person, “B” to another, and then “C” to yet someone else.

Integrity means being trustworthy, honest, and faithful to what is right. And we become people who can be trusted if our words are in line with our actions.

2. Daniel – Integrity Means Commitment (Daniel 6)

So King Darius issued the written decree with the prohibition. When Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went to his house. In his upper room were windows open toward Jerusalem; three times a day he knelt down, prayed, and gave praise to his God, just as he had done before. Then those men came rushing in and found Daniel praying and asking help from his God. – Daniel 6:10-12

The position of Daniel as a high official in the Medo-Persian Empire made many other officials jealous and displeased. To bring down Daniel, they influenced King Darius to issue a decree forbidding worship to anyone except the king (Daniel 6:4-7).

However, Daniel was a man of integrity. He firmly held to his commitment in prayer and not to worship idols. Even being thrown into the lions' den could not shake his heart and faith in God.

Integrity means keeping commitment and loyalty. Those who have integrity will keep their promise and hold to it to the end, even if it requires sacrifice. On the other hand, failure in fulfilling commitments often reflects a person's weak integrity.

As Christians, have we committed ourselves to our faith? Are the promises we have made to God beginning to be shaken by a bad lifestyle? Is our faith easily influenced by friends,, our surroundings,, family,, or the various problems of life that come upon us?

Let us learn to build integrity like Daniel by guarding our commitment to the Lord and obeying His Word.

3. Habakkuk – Integrity Means Responsibility (Habakkuk 1-3)

“Though the fig tree does not blossom, the vine bears no fruit, the yield of the olive disappoints, though the fields produce no food, the flocks are cut off from the fold, and there are no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in God my Savior. The Lord GOD is my strength: He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; He enables me to tread on my heights.” – Habakkuk 3:17-19

Habakkuk is known as a prophet who had integrity in leadership. The difficult situations he faced, such as oppression, injustice, and violence, did not make him abandon God. Habakkuk kept hoping and trusting that the Lord would uphold justice for the righteous.

Integrity means the willingness to accept responsibility, and a responsible attitude is a sign of personal maturity . People of integrity are those who are willing to take risks, improve the situation, and carry out their duties as well as possible, even in difficult circumstances.

Christians who have integrity are able to rejoice in the Lord even when circumstances are not good or when hardship strikes. For example, we are cheated at work, face problems in marriage, or have to lead people who do not like us. When this happens, do we remain faithful,, trusting,, and relying on the Lord? Or do we doubt His power and abandon our faith?

Living with Integrity: Conformity to Christ

“In your life together, let the mind and heart of Christ Jesus be in you.” – Philippians 2:5

In the midst of so much falsehood and pretense in the world, we as Christians actually already have the right foundation, namely the Lord. Therefore, let us align our lives with the mind and heart of Christ. In that way, our integrity can become an inspiration to those who do not yet know the Lord. Amen.
