Are Your Life Priorities Right?

Every day, most people have a series of to-do lists or a list of priority tasks that must be done. For those who are married and managing a household, the day begins with preparing breakfast for the family, taking the children to school, shopping, washing, cleaning the house, and much more. For those who are single: You wake up, rush to find breakfast, then head to work. By the time you arrive at the office, a pile of work is already waiting to be finished-and before you know it, a whole day has simply passed by.

Busyness and a packed daily schedule leave you overwhelmed, confused about which priority should come first. You do not even have time to hang out, exercise, or relax and unwind. As a result, your life is filled with chaos and panic that seem never-ending.

So, let us pause for a moment and look within: could it be that our priorities have been misplaced all this time? What should the right priorities in life look like?

Priority = The Most Precious Thing in Life 

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” - Luke 12:34

Without realizing it, when you give your whole heart to work, studies, household matters, your spouse, pleasures, or hobbies, those things become your treasure. If work is the most precious thing in your life, then work is your priority. Likewise, if your spouse or family is everything to you, then they are your priority.

So, is that wrong? What things should we value above all else?

Let us learn from the following story of the sisters Mary and Martha.

Luke 10:38-40 tells how Jesus visited a village near Bethany (John 11:1) where Mary, Martha, and Lazarus lived. Martha welcomed Jesus into her home, and while Jesus was speaking, her sister Mary sat at Jesus' feet to listen. On the other hand, Martha was very busy serving Jesus. For Martha, giving Jesus the best service was her priority. So when Martha saw that Mary was just sitting there and not helping, Martha complained to Jesus.

She came to Jesus and said: “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me.” - Luke 10:40b

But Jesus' response was truly unexpected.

But the Lord answered her: "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things, but one thing is needed: Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her." - Luke 10:41-42

Jesus rebuked Martha for choosing the wrong priority by being busy with trivial matters. On the other hand, Jesus praised Mary, who chose the best priority in her life, namely listening to the word of God.

Wrong Priorities

Often, we are just like Martha. We are controlled by daily activities, whether work or spiritual activities. Or we become absorbed in hobbies and entertainment. Busy taking (selfie) and uploading them to social media, while diligently posting statuses likely to attract many thumbs-up.

On the other hand, our spiritual life is empty. We have cold love, no self-control, pride, selfishness, resistance to guidance, dishonesty, and are entangled in many kinds of sin. This happens because we do not place our relationship with God as the highest priority, above everything else.

The end of the matter, all has been heard: fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the duty of every person. - Ecclesiastes 12:13 

Even King Solomon, full of wisdom and living in the splendor and luxury everyone longs for, had to admit: there is only one priority that matters most, namely to fear God and obey His commandments. 

Wrong priorities make your life empty, disordered, stripped of peace, and surrounded by many problems. You experience many conflicts, even domestic violence. Your children withdraw. Your character deteriorates and becomes out of control.

This happens because you do not make God's word the foundation of your life. Wrong priorities make you forget to put God first.

Right Priorities

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. - Matthew 6:33

When you hold to the right priorities, as Jesus taught, namely putting God and the truth of His word first, everything will be added to you!

That means your problems will be resolved, your finances may well be restored, your health can improve, your relationship with your spouse becomes more harmonious, your children become more open with you, and work no longer feels like a burden. One thing is certain, you will experience peace, calm, and joy that keep flowing.

Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe in Your commandments. - Psalm 119:66

When you prioritize God and His word, you will become wiser and have good and right understanding.
