A lesson on gratitude: “Honey, our neighbors bought a new car. When will we?”
“Look, his wife has so much jewelry. How come I never get bought any jewelry?”
“Yesterday they went on vacation abroad. How come we only stay around here all the time?”
Questions and demands from a wife to her husband like the examples above are no longer surprising. The world is experiencing a social phenomenon in which people compete to show off their achievements.
But did you know that a wife like this, one who is easily jealous, always wanting to match, or even surpass, other people’s achievements, is actually unknowingly leading her husband astray? A husband who once thought straight is eventually tempted to cheat in order to get more money. The reason is that whatever he gives is no longer received by his wife with thanksgiving, but is always considered not enough.
So then, why should we be grateful for a condition that seems not as good as other families’? And how can we become wives who are full of gratitude?
Wife: Helper or Saboteur?
The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." – Genesis 2:18
God created woman to be a helper for man, even though in the end it was Eve who invited Adam to eat the fruit of knowledge (Genesis 3). That transgression made Adam and Eve’s lives no longer comfortable because they were driven out of the Garden of Eden. Eve failed to fulfill God’s design for her to be a good helper for Adam.
However, that does not mean we can use Eve as a reason behind our “failure” to be a helper for our husbands. God gives free will to every human being. We can choose. Will we obey or break God’s command? Will we help our husbands away from the pit, or instead undermine them until they fall into it?
Contentment Brings Benefit
In the world’s competitive climate, a person will be respected if they possess things considered valuable. Owning a luxurious house and car, holding a prestigious position, being able to send children to expensive schools, managing a company with branches everywhere. In short, the richer a person is, the more they will be taken into account.
When these things have not yet been obtained, a wife whose faith is not strong will make her husband a punching bag. A husband who is under pressure in the competition of the workplace still has to face his wife’s demands at home. If there’s money, dear husband is loved; if there’s no money, dear husband is thrown away. A wife like this is pleased when her husband hands over more money, without asking where it came from.
It is no wonder that corruption cases are often linked with a wife’s consumptive behavior and hedonistic lifestyle.
So it is true what the Bible says: godliness is profitable when accompanied by contentment. On the other hand, always feeling that we lack something will actually harm us.
Now godliness with contentment is great gain. – 1 Timothy 6:6
The Benefits of Gratitude
A wife who is full of gratitude will make her husband feel relieved and motivated to strive even better. If a husband knows that his wife will not demand more, he can think calmly and act rightly. In this way, he is kept away from disgraceful deeds. Even when the husband is tempted to cheat, he remembers that his wife would surely be disappointed, and so he refrains from doing it.
She does him good and not harm all the days of her life. – Proverbs 31:12
Thank your husband, manage your husband’s blessings (income) well, and support him with positive words and attitudes. Those are some of the good things we can do as wives.
Gratitude makes life feel light and easy to live. There is no need to compare yourself with others or to use another family’s standard of prosperity. If they vacation abroad, you can also be happy enjoying a vacation to the village or to domestic tourist destinations. What matters is not the pretty photos or the cool status, but the opportunity to enjoy togetherness with the people you love.
Tips for Becoming a Wife Full of Gratitude
1. Remember Your Purpose in Life
“… that they should seek Him, in the hope that they might feel after Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.” – Acts 17:27
God wants us to seek and find Him, because only in Him do we find true satisfaction. Not through wealth or worldly beauty. God delights to be near us, because we are so precious to Him. Realizing our worth in God’s eyes will make us continually grateful.
2. Choose a Positive Community
Do not be deceived: Bad company ruins good morals. – 1 Corinthians 15:33
Do not force yourself to follow a lifestyle that is currently trendy if you truly cannot afford it yet. There is no need to become something that is not really you just so you can be accepted, admired, or appreciated. A positive community will accept you as you are. People who have a positive mindset will encourage you to live with gratitude.
3. Find Productive Activities
Instead of grumbling, it is better to get involved and help your husband earn a living. In this millennial era, there are many lawful ways to make money. With the right product / service, along with the proper promotional media, we can reach many customers. Or join social activities and become a volunteer to help those in need.
Keeping ourselves busy with productive things leaves us no time to grumble. On the contrary, we will be grateful because we still have the opportunity to work and gain things that are beneficial.
4. Make a Gratitude List
Forgetfulness is one of human traits. We often forget that God has repeatedly given help and blessings in life. We are like the Israelites who were always worried and grumbling, even though they had often seen God’s miracles (Numbers 14:27).
Do not forget God’s goodness. Write down and post the things you are grateful for on the wall, on the wardrobe, on the vanity mirror, or in places that are easy to see. Guaranteed, you will be refreshed again every time you read them. Your heart becomes calm and full of gratitude because you are sure that God will surely help you through every challenge and hardship of life.
If you still often find it hard to be grateful, feel anxious, or feel that your life is not blessed, try applying the tips below.
A grateful wife will save her husband from the trap of sin. On the other hand, a demanding wife will plunge her husband into the pit of death. May the tips above help you become a wife who is always full of gratitude. Amen!
