Nothing Is Impossible sung by Planetshakers is one of my favorite worship songs. Every word in its lyrics, even the flow of its music, helps me express my feelings and declare my faith in God.
Not only worship songs, but in general we all have reasons for liking a song. Maybe the lyrics voice what is in your heart but hard to express. Perhaps the melody brings calm, joy, enthusiasm, or a new atmosphere. Or the song can improve your concentration, intelligence, and creativity. Whatever the reason, we tend to look for the benefits of a musical work.
So then, no matter how much you enjoy church music, did you know that there are a number of amazing benefits we receive when listening to worship songs?
Worship Songs Are a Means of Praising God

Be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music to the Lord with all your heart. – Ephesians 5:18b-19
Besides praying, reading the Bible, building fellowship (fellowship), sharing the gospel, and keeping our lives pure, God also wants us to sing and shout for Him. But no matter how good the lyrics and music are, a worship song will remain just an ordinary song if you do not sing it with all your heart.
Singing worship songs is one way to praise God (worshipping). Nothing Is Impossible makes me trust God again, even when the road ahead seems difficult to go through. This song reminds me that nothing is impossible if we are with God.
What is your favorite worship song? Do its lyrics encourage you to glorify God, surrender more fully, love others more, or receive comfort? Whatever it is, sing it wholeheartedly to God.
Good for Mental Health

Not only spiritually, worship songs also have great benefits for our mental condition. Healthy mental capacity enables us to think, feel, and act properly within reasonable limits. On the other hand, mental pressure can make us stressed, make it hard to build relationships with others, make it difficult to make choices, and even trigger the desire to hurt ourselves.
In the Journal of Positive Psychology in 2013, Dr. Tuomas Eerola explained that listening to worship songs can improve mood and increase happiness over a two-week period. This is closely related to neuroscience. When listening to songs that trigger emotional reactions like worship songs, our brains produce oxytocin and dopamine (the happy hormones) that can lighten our mood .
Amazing, isn’t it? God gives talent to songwriters so that every word and note in worship songs can touch our hearts and bring us health. So, quoting Psalm 96:1, let us: “Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth!”
Helping Us Remember the Word in an Enjoyable Way

Singing or listening to songs is an enjoyable way to remember God’s word. I once felt bored and found it hard to understand the contents of the Bible as text on black-and-white pages. Yet the same word sounded fresher and easier to understand when I listened to it through worship songs.
For example, try reading the lyrics of the song Nothing Is Impossible below:
Through You I can do anything
I can do all things
Cause it’s You who gives me strength
Nothing is Impossible
Through You blind eyes are opened
Strongholds are broken
I am living by faith
Nothing is impposible
I’m not gonna live by what I see
I’m not gonna live by what I feel
Deep down I know that You’re here with me
I know that You can do anything
The song lyrics above are a quotation from Luke 1:37 (“For nothing will be impossible with God.”) Whenever I sing it, I remember that verse and can reassure myself again of God’s promise.
Learn to see the message in worship songs and always connect it with God’s word. It is important for us to listen to worship songs centered on God’s word, not merely a string of beautiful phrases. Surely, your Scripture reading and quiet time will become much more enjoyable.
Giving Strength and New Encouragement

But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall soar on wings like eagles; they shall run and not grow weary, they shall walk and not faint. – Isaiah 40:31
Sometimes, praying and reading the word do not immediately make us rise up and feel encouraged in a short time. This happens when we are down while facing life’s difficulties. I have experienced it myself. I believe God works through those moments, but there were times when it was hard for me to pray and listen to God.
God’s word can be expressed through songs created to praise Him. Many worship songs have helped me, giving me strength and fresh encouragement to rise again. Listening to worship songs makes me feel peaceful and safe.
Let’s start listening to worship songs and learn to draw out their meaning. Through song, you can praise God, become mentally healthier, remember His word in an enjoyable way, and even receive strength and fresh encouragement. Amen!
