Church Theme June 2020 - The Devotion of Our Youth

The Devotion of Our Youth

"Go and proclaim to the people of Jerusalem: This is what the LORD says: I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed Me through the wilderness, through a land not sown." - Jeremiah 2:2

This June’s theme is taken from Jeremiah 2:2. At a glance, this verse speaks of God remembering the first love of the people of Israel when they were in the wilderness.

The question is, what kind of first love does God remember? Wasn’t Israel a troubled nation from the beginning, always grieving God’s heart.

The Sin of the People of Israel

If we look at 1 Corinthians 10, then we can see what actually happened in the wilderness at that time. They sinned greatly against God, especially in these 5 things (5 deadly sins):

  1. Idolatry
  2. Sexual immorality
  3. Rebellion
  4. Grumbling
  5. Feeling strong - prideful

In 1 Corinthians 10:13, it is said that the temptations they experienced were ordinary temptations, not something too difficult for them to handle. Which means, they could choose not to commit those sins.

Seeing the sins of the people of Israel, Jeremiah 2:2 is actually an ironic statement. God is not remembering that people’s love for Him, but He is showing His heart, His devotion to mankind that does not change.

The Character of God

In Jeremiah 2, God is revealing Himself and His character, namely:

  1. Goodness
  2. Care
  3. Will
  4. Faithfulness
  5. Love

In Jeremiah 3, God calls the people of Israel to return to Him. Even though the sins they committed were so many and so serious, God still wants them to repent and come back to Him.

Today, just like the people of Israel, we are people who are easily up and down and often grieve God’s heart because of the sins we commit. But God’s heart and character remain the same. God’s devotion to mankind does not change. He calls us all back and is always ready to receive us again.

The question is, how do we respond to His call?
